Manduria cherry tomato
Manduria cherry tomato: a dry-farmed village tomato from Taranto
Small, oval and bright red, often with a little point at the tip, this is the tomato Manduria grows without irrigation. Growers keep their own seed each year, picked from the lowest truss on the plant. It is a traditional agri-food product (PAT) and a Slow Food Presidium.
- Thin skin and an oval shape, often ending in a small point
- Notably high acidity, a quality prized for preserving
- Seed saved by growers from year to year, taken from the pick of each crop
How to enjoy it. Fresh from mid-June to late July, it tops friselle, sits alongside the local carosello cucumber or goes into jatedda. Fully ripe, it becomes a passata for the rest of the year.
