Small-scale fishing at Torre Guaceto: shared rules that brought the bluefish back
Off Carovigno, inside the protected waters of Torre Guaceto, fishing is allowed in just one of three zones: 4-5 metre boats, one trip a week, and different mesh sizes for bluefish and for other species. Rules worked out together with the reserve's management have raised catch sizes, especially for red mullet and scorpionfish. The Slow Food Presidium tells the story of this shared approach to fishing.
- The return of the bluefish, once thought lost from these waters
- Few boats, few days at sea: a light touch on a healthy ecosystem
- Fishing here goes back to the Bronze Age, as finds in the reserve show
How to enjoy it. Choose by season: mackerel, amberjack and cuttlefish in the cold months, dentex and sea bass from summer into autumn, octopus and red mullet in spring.
