Melannurca Campana (Annurca apple)
Melannurca Campana PGI: the apple that blushes red on the ground
Annurca apples are picked still green and finish ripening on the ground, laid out on soft beds and turned regularly to face the light until red covers almost the whole fruit. It is an apple with deep roots in Campania, already painted at Herculaneum and mentioned by Pliny. A PGI since 2006.
- Small to medium, flattened, with a short stalk and a smooth, waxy skin
- After the ground-ripening beds, red covers 80-90% of the fruit
- White, firm, crunchy flesh, juicy and sweet with a gentle tartness and a delicate scent
How to enjoy it. Store it cool, then let it come to room temperature before eating so the aroma opens up. Lovely raw, baked whole, or in tarts and sfogliatelle.
