Marrone di Serino / Castagna di Serino (chestnut)
Marrone di Serino PGI: chestnuts from the volcanic Picentini hills
Santimango and Verdola are the two varieties behind the Marrone di Serino, also sold as Castagna di Serino, gathered from late September to early November. They grow on volcanic soils where chemical weedkillers are banned, in a valley the monks of Cava and Montevergine turned into chestnut country. PGI since 2018.
- A roundish, slightly lopsided nut with a star-shaped tip, rarely split by inner walls
- A glossy brown shell marked with dark, well-spaced stripes
- Firm, crunchy, sweet flesh that peels easily and holds up well when processed
How to enjoy it. Fresh, boil or roast them; dried, they are the basis of the local "marroni del prete". Keep them somewhere cool and dry.
