Limone Costa d'Amalfi (Amalfi Coast lemon)
Limone Costa d'Amalfi PGI: the Sfusato lemon of the sea-facing terraces
On the Amalfi Coast's dry-stone terraces, beneath chestnut-pole pergolas, grows the Sfusato Amalfitano: a tapering lemon picked only by hand from February to October. Amalfi's seafarers once carried it on board against scurvy, and it has been a PGI since 2001.
- Elliptical and elongated, at least 100 grams each, with a pale yellow skin
- A peel rich in essential oils and intensely fragrant, prized above all for lemon liqueur
- Juicy flesh with few seeds or none, sharp acidity and an almost sweet finish
How to enjoy it. On the coast it is even eaten in slices, with a pinch of salt or sugar and a few mint leaves. Juice and grated zest lift seafood starters, pasta, fish, meat and desserts.
