Basilicata strawberry
Basilicata strawberry PGI: a long Ionian season, from November to June
Grown in nine towns along the Ionian strip of the province of Matera, from Bernalda to Policoro, it is picked by hand from November to June, ripe and with its calyx. The mild climate, sunshine and fertile soils of the Metaponto plain underpin its PGI, registered in 2025.
- Elongated cone shape and an even, bright red, calyx on, at least 25 mm across
- Firm, fleshy texture with an intense, fresh and fruity scent
- Sweet yet balanced: at least 7.5 °Brix, with acidity to keep it lively
How to enjoy it. Simplest eaten just as it is; it also goes into tarts, fritters, jams, ice cream and cocktails. It keeps a few days in the fridge, ideally in the fruit and vegetable drawer.
