Rosso scritto bean of the Pantano di Pignola
Rosso scritto bean of the Pantano di Pignola: dark red script on a beige seed
A climbing bean grown in Pignola and part of Abriola, just outside Potenza, above 600 metres in the Pantano basin. Cool summers and silty clay soils suit it well; a small group of guardian growers now keeps it alive as a Slow Food Presidium.
- Round to oval seeds, beige with dark red streaks that look like handwriting
- Bound to the Pantano's microclimate, where summer highs stay below 30 °C
- A mark from the guardian growers' association identifies beans grown to their own rules
How to enjoy it. For centuries beans were a staple for local farming families, as a survey of 1811 already records. Quantities stay small, and the harvest runs from early September into early October.
