Gulf of Taranto clementines PGI: seedless, fragrant, picked by hand

Across the Ionian plain around Palagiano, Massafra, Castellaneta and the other towns of the area, a hot, dry climate ripens sweet, aromatic clementines that are almost always seedless. Comune, Fedele, Precoce di Massafra and the other permitted varieties are cut by hand with shears. The name has been a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) since 2003.

  • Roundish fruit, flattened at the poles, with a smooth or faintly rough orange skin
  • Seedless: the production rules allow only the rarest exceptions
  • Sealed packs carry the PGI wording; loose fruit carries the denomination's logo

How to enjoy it. Peel and eat them as they are, fresh and refreshing. They keep for several weeks in the fridge and suit juices, sorbets and marmalade.
