Cipollotto Nocerino (spring onion)
Cipollotto Nocerino PDO: a white, tender spring onion from the Sarno valley
Picked young, before the plant has run its course, Cipollotto Nocerino grows in the volcanic soils of the Sarno basin, between the Agro Nocerino Sarnese and the countryside of Pompeii and Stabia. A fresco in Pompeii's Sarno lararium already shows small white onions. Peeled by hand and tied in bunches, it has been a PDO since 2008.
- A pure white, cylindrical, tender bulb under deep green, pointed leaves
- Sweet, juicy flesh, mild and never hot, yet savoury and fragrant
- Hand-peeled to a clean, glossy bulb and tied in bunches of three to ten
How to enjoy it. Enjoy it mostly raw, in salads with tomatoes and leafy greens, or as a finishing touch on pasta dishes. Keep it in the fridge and use it within a few days.
