Fara Filiorum Petri white onion
Fara Filiorum Petri white onion, the flat sweet piattona of the Foro valley
Broad and flattened, with white skin and a sweet, aromatic taste, it is known in the village as piattona. Tradition traces it to the gardens of the monks of Sant'Eufemia in the fourteenth century; nearly lost, it returned to the fields from seed kept by the last grower, and is now a Slow Food Presidium.
- A bulb wider than it is tall, white-skinned and sweetly fragrant
- Grown without chemical weedkillers, on manure, in the village's alluvial soils
- A traditional Abruzzo product (PAT) as well as a Slow Food Presidium
How to enjoy it. Slice it raw into salads or cook it with chicken livers; to really know it, make a cipollata, left to soften slowly in terracotta until it turns sweet.
