Somma cherry of the Lattari mountains
Somma cherry of the Lattari mountains: red with a white tip, a Slow Food Presidium
In the countryside of Gragnano and Pimonte, above the Gulf of Naples, cherry trees have been recorded since the early 1600s and still grow in mixed orchards among other crops. Tall trees, long ladders, picking and sorting by hand: that is how a variety close to vanishing has come down to us, now safeguarded by the Slow Food Presidium.
- Easy to spot: red skin finished with a white tip
- Firm, juicy flesh that comes cleanly away from the stone when ripe
- Sweet, intense flavour, to catch in its short May-to-July season
How to enjoy it. A cherry to eat fresh and whole, in the few weeks of harvest between mid-May and early July.
