Ciliegia di Bracigliano (cherry)
Ciliegia di Bracigliano PGI: crisp, heart-shaped cherries from the 'cherry country'
Fourteen hill towns between Salerno and Avellino, on soils often rich in volcanic material, grow cherries recorded in notarial deeds as far back as 1556. Spernocchia, Sciazza, Pagliaccia and Don Carmelo are among the permitted cultivars, picked only by hand, stalk on, from May to July. It has been a PGI since 2023.
- Heart-shaped with glossy skin from deep red to amaranth, at least 20 mm across
- Firm, crunchy, juicy flesh that clings lightly to the stone
- Sweet-tart taste with fruity aromas and a high sugar level
How to enjoy it. Eat it fresh above all, or turn it into jam and cherries in spirit, as in Zizzinella, a local sweet with buffalo ricotta and hazelnuts. It keeps a few days in the fridge once damaged fruit is removed.
