Bergamotto di Reggio Calabria (bergamot essential oil)
Bergamotto di Reggio Calabria PDO: cold-extracted bergamot essential oil
It is drawn from the peel of Feminella, Castagnaro and Fantastico bergamots grown along a strip of Ionian coast some hundred kilometres long. The fruit is hand-picked between November and March and the essence is taken cold, using nothing but a fine mist of water. It has been a PDO since 2001.
- A clear liquid, green to greenish yellow; a slight sediment can form
- It smells of freshly scored bergamot peel
- Perfumers prize it as a fixative lasting over 24 hours; eau de cologne grew from it
How to enjoy it. In the kitchen it has long flavoured candied fruit, tea, sorbets and pastry: the same essence that anchors fine fragrance.
