Altamurana sheep
Altamurana sheep: a hardy Murgia breed kept alive by a Slow Food Presidium
White fleece, a long head and the toughness to live on stony pasture: the Altamurana, known locally as moscia, is a native breed shaped by centuries on the Murgia plateau. It naturally resists ticks and the piroplasmosis they spread, yet its low yields brought it close to vanishing.
- Meat that carries the scent of the wild herbs growing on the Murgia pastures
- Valuable genes: it shrugs off tick bites and never catches piroplasmosis
- One lamb per birth and slow growth: a low-yield breed the Presidium has chosen to protect
How to enjoy it. Look for it in any season from the Presidium's breeders, and let the herb-scented character of the plateau come through on the plate.
