Montepulciano d'Abruzzo
Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, the red of the region's most widely planted grape
Red and only red, it is made from at least 85% Montepulciano grown across Abruzzo's four provinces, much of it still trained on the pergola abruzzese. Deep ruby with violet glints when young, it moves towards garnet as it ages. Nine sub-zones refine its origin, and in the Teramo hills the grape has its own DOCG, Colline Teramane Montepulciano d'Abruzzo.
- An intense, floral nose of red berries and spice; full, balanced and lightly tannic
- In the sub-zones Montepulciano rises to 90-100% and the wine rests for longer
- Riserva from Casauria, Teate or Terre dei Peligni spends at least nine months in wood
How to enjoy it. Drink the base wine from 1 February following the vintage; sub-zone Riserva wines spend two years or more in the cellar before they reach the table.
