Gioia del Colle DOC: Primitivo from the high Murge plateau
This appellation of inland Bari, spread over fifteen Murge towns and part of Altamura, is built around Primitivo. In the bottling named after the grape it is the only variety allowed, and two years turn it into a Riserva. Blended reds and rosés, a white and two sweet Aleaticos complete it.
- A red edging to violet, then to orange as it ages; full-bodied, growing more velvety over the years
- It may keep a faint sweetness, yet the rules cap residual sugar at 10 grams per litre
- Among the sweet wines, the fortified Aleatico is warmer and may not be sold before March after harvest
How to enjoy it. Open the Primitivo for a full, harmonious red, knowing that age softens it further. The sweet Aleatico, garnet and velvety, suits anyone after a rounded, moderately sweet glass.
