Fiano di Avellino
Fiano di Avellino DOCG, an Irpinian white of toasted hazelnut and long life
It grows on the hills of Irpinia between the Partenio and Terminio ranges, at 300-600 m, where snowy winters and dry summers with wide day-night swings ripen thick-skinned grapes. A white of marked acidity and a long finish, also made as Riserva and sparkling, it is counted by its consortium among Italy's longest-lived whites.
- Straw yellow with green glints when young, turning golden as it ages
- On the nose, toasted hazelnut over white-fleshed fruit and yellow flowers, with a mineral edge
- The standard wine holds 5-8 years, the Riserva 10-15 and more, gaining honey and beeswax
How to enjoy it. Serve at 8-10 °C: young with spaghetti and anchovies or baked fish, fuller styles with fish soup, the Riserva with fried fish. Its acidity sits well with buffalo mozzarella.
